Dozy

Dozy is a tangible device that supports falling asleep. Consisting of a two object ecosystem that guides the user into relaxation through biometrics, light, sound and comfort, leading to falling asleep faster.

Primary Device

The primary device is designed from multiple rounds of user testing to be comfortable while getting the necessary metrics to start the experience. The pillow naturally guides users to reach their hand into the pocket, where the breathing rate sensor is located. Once the primary device detects the BR, a reactive sound and light scape help guide the user into a relaxed state.

Secondary Device

Designed as an ambient object, the secondary device uses gentle light and sound to give the user a calming rhythm to focus on outside of their own racing thoughts. For those who feel more comfortable with a sense of presence, or for people in long-distance relationships, the devices can also be exchanged between partners. In this context, each person rests with an ambient rhythm shaped by the other, creating a quiet emotional connection without screens, messages, or direct communication. Rather than interrupting the user, the device becomes a subtle companion that makes rest feel more supported, shared, and emotionally connected.

Research, Methods, & Development

The research behind Dozy explored how screen-free, embodied technology can support relaxation before sleep. Using autobiographical design, user testing, physiological feedback, and overnight observation, the project investigated how people physically and emotionally prepare for rest. Testing focused on comfort, body positioning, breathing rhythm, heart-rate sensing, and the role of soft light and sound in reducing late-night overstimulation. These methods helped shape Dozy into a calm, tactile sleep companion that supports the body naturally without requiring active attention.
